After a poor 2013 fiscal year, Square Enix executives attributed the company's 2014 return to profitability in part to the game's strong sales and subscriber base, reaching a total of over 22 million registered players by April 2021. The game released to largely positive reception critics praised the game for its solid mechanics and progression, and they commended Yoshida for turning the project around. The original version shut down in November 2012 and was followed by an alpha test for Version 2.0. This new game, initially dubbed "Version 2.0", features a new game engine, improved server infrastructure, and revamped gameplay, interface, and story. This team was responsible for generating content for the original version as well as developing a brand new game which would address all of the previous release's criticisms. In response, then-Square Enix President Yoichi Wada announced that a new team, led by Yoshida, would take over and attempt to fix the issues with it. The original Final Fantasy XIV, released in September 2010, was a commercial and critical failure. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north. Through the gods' blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release.

Next: Final Fantasy 14: How to Unlock The Heroes' Gauntletįinal Fantasy 14: Endwalker will be released for PC, PS4, and PS5 in fall 2021.Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Endwalker might sound like a good name for a final expansion, but it's just the beginning of a new story in Eorzea. FFXIV has only been around for a decade, but it still makes a lot of money for Square Enix through its paid expansions, cosmetic items, and monthly subscription fees. Square Enix has proven that it's committed to keeping its MMOs running for a long time, considering FFXI started in 2001 and isn't ending any time soon. The world of Eorzea still has plenty of stories to tell, and it's exciting to think of what will happen next. Even if Endwalker did spell the end for FFXIV, the game would still likely have more content than most players could ever expect to get through. The main storyline is a massive endeavor on its own, and that's not including the side quests, job quests, and all of the co-op dungeons in the game. New players can expect hundreds of hours of playtime, as the world of Eorzea is teeming with content. Game Director Naoki Yoshida teased FFXIV's story was ending earlier this year, but the finality of the Endwalker name prompted Square Enix to confirm the game will go on. Endwalker will involve trips to the seat of the Garlean Empire - and even the world's moon itself - but there is still scope for more stories in the future. The official FFXIVTwitter account confirmed Endwalker is only finishing the main storyline that started in A Realm Reborn. The Endwalker name may suggest FFXIV is coming to an end, but the game's millions of devoted fans don't need to worry, as the story of Eorzea isn't concluding with the expansion.

Related: FFXIV's Latest Patch Brings Back Another Iconic FF7 Boss The story of FFXIV continued with the acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion, along with other tales told through regular updates, but the next major story beat will happen in Endwalker. It's not just the Scions who are facing threats across Eorzea, as players from all over the globe can band together to tackle bosses and dungeons. They soon get involved in a continent-spanning war against the Garlean Empire, become the Warrior of Light, and join the Scions of the Seventh Dawn in order to help bring peace to the world. The player's character starts out as a lone adventurer in one of the three city-states of Eorzea. One of the biggest draws of FFXIV is its story, which began its rebooted version with 2013's A Realm Reborn. But while the FFXIV: Endwalker expansion does mark an important milestone in the game's story, it's not quite the end of Square Enix's FFXIV support. The latest expansion for Final Fantasy 14has been announced, and its name suggests it could be the last.
